Ever heard of black salt in magic? Not the one in your kitchen, but the special blend witches and healers have used for centuries to keep bad vibes away! A little salt, a little ash, a little spice… and suddenly you’ve got a powerful tool for protection, cleansing, and keeping your space ✨good-energy only✨. Let’s dive into the history, benefits, and how you can make your black salt on your very own!

Black salt, in the context of spiritual and folk practices, is not the same as the culinary salt used in cooking.
This ritual blend is traditionally made by combining natural ingredients such as rock salt, ashes, and protective herbs.
Black salt has been recorded in various traditions, such as Hoodoo, Wicca, and European folk magic, as a tool for protection, banishing negativity, and spiritual cleansing. It was often sprinkled around homes or thresholds to repel unwanted energies. Also known as witches’ salt, black salt has long been seen as a protective boundary material, keeping out hexes, spirits, or ill will.
Till date, black salt has remained valued in spirituality for its practical use in creating boundaries against unwanted energies and maintaining balance within a sacred or personal space.

How to Make Black Salt
Every witch has a different recipe of black salt and you can even come up with your own once you know the essential ingredients. To me, these are: salt of course, egg shells and black pepper powder.
Before we get started, I’d like to highlight the benefits of each ingredient in this recipe.
Rock salt – You can use sea salt, Himalayan pink salt, kosher salt or rock salt. Salt acts as a base of purification and grounding.
Egg shells – These are incredibly potent when it comes to protection and warding off evil. Some people sprinkle powdered egg shells alone along the perimeter of their houses to act as negativity and evil repellants. Egg shells should be collected, disinfected, dried and powdered. I used a mortar and pestle to powder my egg shells with the rest of the ingredients to create my black salt.
Activated charcoal – The color black is a powerful tool to absorb negativity, banish evil eyes, jealousy and evil spirits. Activated charcoal not only gives a deep black color to black salt but is also cleansing, protective and grounding.
Incense ashes – Incense ashes act as a spiritual catalyst, anchoring past ritual energy into the black salt and making it more potent for protection, banishing, or warding off negativity.
Black pepper powder – Black pepper has fiery energy and is known for its strong spiritual protection properties and banishment of dark energy.
Clove powder – Cloves are an important herb for shielding you from evil entities, dark magic and backfired spells.
Here’s my recipe for a powerful witches’ black salt that’s got you covered!
Ingredients:
- ½ cup of rock salt
- 1 teaspoon of activated charcoal
- 5-7 eggshells
- 1 teaspoon clove powder
- 1 teaspoon black pepper powder
- 1 teaspoon incense ashes
Directions:
- Begin by cleansing your space with incense smoke, preferably sage or rosemary.
- Into a mortar, add rock salt and egg shells and crush them till coarsely ground. The crunch from the eggshells is so ASMR!
- Next add 1 teaspoon of activated charcoal, 1 teaspoon of clove powder, 1 teaspoon of black pepper powder and 1 teaspoon of incense ashes.
- Use the pestle to crush, grind and pulverize all the ingredients into a coarse salt-textured powder. Make it into as much of a fine powder as you can manage to get it to be. It’s so fun and therapeutic to watch your ingredients turn into powder form!
- Once you reach a consistency that you’re happy with, your black salt is ready!
- Store it in a clean dry jar.
